Provision of Varenicline under Patient Group Direction by accredited community pharmacists in the Oxfordshire County Council

“SmokeFreeLife Oxfordshire” (stop smoking services provided by Solutions4Health) have been commissioned by Oxfordshire County Council to deliver smoking cessation services across Oxfordshire from 1st April 2018.  As part of this service, community pharmacists have the opportunity to become accredited for Champix (Varenicline) provision under the Patient Group Directions (PGD).

Solutions4Health will be running a training event for the provision of Varenicline under Patient Group Direction by accredited community pharmacists.  Pharmacies will work in partnership with the clients and “SmokeFreeLife Oxfordshire” service throughout a 12-week quit plan.  The tariff is listed below for Service supply as per the PGD protocol:

Initial registration and starter pack supply (14 days) of varenicline via PGD

  • £10 for initial consultation fee +£4 Champix Starter pack supply service fee+ Champix drug tariff cost (VAT exempt, minus NHS prescription levy charge subject to client exemption status)

Varenicline PGD stage 2 (supply and advice for follow up appointments)

  • £4 follow up service fee for fortnightly reviews and supplies+ Champix drug tariff cost (VAT exempt, minus NHS prescription levy charge subject to client exemption status)

If your pharmacy wishes to provide the Champix (Varenicline) under the PGD, it is essential that you attend the training event to gain the necessary background information and knowledge to enable you to deliver the service for the provision of the new Varenicline PGD that comes into force on 1st April 2018.  The training event will be delivered as follows by Darush Attar (National Trainer).  Pharmacies wishing to provide the service MUST attend the launch event.
