RPS LPF Advances in the treatment and management of diabetes

Topic and Speaker:  Advances in the treatment and management of diabetes by Dr Alireza Mohammadi, Consultant physician in General Internal Medicine with sub speciality in Diabetes and Endocrinology.

Dr Mohammadi’s initial research was on cardiac valves. He then completed his 5 year training in diabetes and endocrinology in Oxford and is lead consultant at Wexham Park Hospital. He is an honorary consultant in Oxford University Hospitals and teaches trainee doctors in the Oxford Deanery. He attends CCG meetings on diabetes management in Slough and Windsor and is involved with clinical trials in diabetes at King Edward hospital, Windsor.

His talk will include 3 main items:

  • History of diabetes type 2 and its management
  • The current exciting time of diabetes management
  • Our expectations in managing type 2 diabetes for the next few years

Learning outcomes are:

  1. Quick review of the journey of insulin, sulphonyl urea, Metformin, TZDs
  2. Gut and diabetes: Incretin effect and DPP4 inhibitors and GLP 1 Agonists
  3. Kidney and Diabetes: SGLT2 inhibitors
  4. Side effects of new medications
  5. New Cardiovascular outcome trials and their importance in management of type 2
  6. Remission of diabetes type 2: Bariatric surgery, low calorie diet
