RPS Thames Valley LPF – The Management of ADHD by Pharmacists

The Management of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) by Pharmacists?

Our speaker, Dr James Jeffs, is a Consultant Psychiatrist in Reading and is the Medical Lead for the General Adult Mental Health Service for Berkshire West Healthcare Foundation Trust. In addition, he is employed in rehabilitation psychiatry.

He has worked in acute inpatient and crisis team psychiatry and has a special interest in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).  He has led the prescribing of the Adult ADHD service in Berkshire for the past 4 years.

His talk will cover what ADHD is, who it effects and how to diagnose it. He will discuss the medical treatment and its effectiveness, safety, interactions, and contraindications as well as debating the treatment controversies. As a theme running through the talk he will highlight areas where pharmacists are often drawn into contact with ADHD.

Jenny Perry and Rachael Stannard, two pharmacists from Reading will be facilitating at the meeting.

Learning objectives: After participating in this session you will be able to:

1. Describe ADHD and the basics of its diagnosis
2. Understand the types and causes of ADHD
3. Discuss the medical treatment its effectiveness, safety, contraindications and interactions
4. Know when pharmacists may come into contact with ADHD patients and could be involved with their care

Car parking instructions at the hospital – Entrance 4 is to the South side of the Hospital in Wexham Park Lane (marked psychiatry and maternity) off Church Lane. Please note that the car park in front of the Postgraduate Centre is now for staff only! The new parking instructions are to turn into Entrance 4 as before and then drive straight ahead, past the single-storey Postgraduate Centre on the right, to the car park barrier ahead of you which is outside the maternity entrance, take a ticket in order to raise the barrier and it is now pay on exit with money or a card.
